HISTORY
SOUTHWOOD BIBLE Tulsa Oklahoma

Our ORIGIN STORY

OUR CHURCH

Patrian: The first entry in the minute book records a meeting in the home of Jim Degnan on 4-27-70 to decide on a name for the church. The Articles of Incorporation for “Patrian Church, Inc.” were filed on 6-30-70. Patrian is a Greek word meaning the royal family of God.

Patrian Bible Church: Shortly after the resignation of our first Pastor-Teacher, around July 1989, the congregation began to refer to Patrian as Patrian Bible Church.

Southwood Bible Church: The name of the church was officially changed to Southwood Bible Church effective 9-27-1995.

OUR PASTORS

Dr. Glenn A. Carnagey

Served as our Pastor-Teacher from 8-20-72 until 6-30-89, almost 17 years. Before 8-20-72, Dr. Carnage commuted every Tuesday night from Muskogee to conduct a weekly Bible class. At that time, he was the P/T of Grace Bible Church of Muskogee.

Dr. Daniel W. Hill

was called as our Pastor-Teacher effective 4-1-90 and has now faithfully led our church for over 15 years. He moved to Tulsa on 6-2-90.

In our 35 Years

We have not had a pastor for only 3 years. During those times guest speakers were organized including: David Kennedy, Phil Heideman, Glen Cunningham, John Hintz, Chuck Clarke, Dan Hill, Warren Doud, Gary Glenney, Don Hargrove, Roger Simon, Drue Freeman, and others.

Our Facility

The land (approximately 5 acres) was purchased from Harmon and Rosa Skidmore on 10-2-73 for $53,000. Annual payments were made on a note with 8% interest beginning in 12-74. The property was released in 5 separate tracts as payments were made.

Messick Construction of Tulsa constructed the original 7,300 square-foot building now comprising the auditorium, front bathrooms, foyer, and the rooms on the North side, in 1977. The turnkey price was $153,000! A member of the Church loaned the money to build the church.

Our beautiful ebony Yamaha Grand Piano was purchased on 8-23-77 for $7,600. The bench was $500.

Auditorium theater-type seating for 198 with folding half desks was added in 1983. The congregation donated over $28,000 toward this seating.

Auditorium theater-type seating for 198 with folding half desks was added in 1983. The congregation donated over $28,000 toward this seating. Before then, the church used metal folding-style chairs only. If you got to class early, you could grab a chair with a half desk on it. Some of those chairs are now used by the youth in the upstairs rooms.

In 1986 new fluorescent lighting was added in the auditorium at a cost of $1,071.83. This was a major improvement and a sight for sore eyes!

We added a major addition in 1987 with some other refurbishing for a total cost of $265,161.44. Messick Construction of Tulsa also built this addition. It added the South wing of classrooms, the back foyer with bathrooms, the fellowship hall, the kitchen, and the upstairs rooms.
This added over 10,000 square feet of space.
